Cap Stack Medal Walkthrough

Posted by DiMono - October 1st, 2010

Cap Stack is an addictive game where you catch hats on your head. It's also incredibly fun, but I guess that goes with the territory.

Gameplay:
Blue hats are worth 10, all other hats are worth 20. Torches will burn away your hat stack, and ninja stars are electrocuted and will temporarily freeze you where you are if you hit them. Torches are safe for your body but dangerous for your hats, ninja stars are safe for your hats but dangerous for your body. Ninja stars aren't really that much of a hazard though, as the worst thing that happens is you miss a hat or two, as opposed to torches which take them all away.

Your score from accumulated hats will remain even if your stack gets burned away, but it's the size of your stack at the end of the round that determines your bonus. If you're playing for score, it's probably a good strategy to keep your stack near the top of the gold level until just before the end of the round (the music is your cue, or count the hats that fall), and then catch the last few hats to push you over at that point.

Medals (16, 340pts):
Not the Keys! (5) - Figure out the controls! Basically, try to use the keyboard, then switch to the mouse.

First Cap (5) - Wear your first cap. I seriously hope this one's self explanatory...

Cap-det (5) - Earn a Bronze Medal. The game is serious about this, you have to earn each medal separately. Bronze medals are worth an extra 500pts to your round score.

Cap-tain (5) - Earn a Silver Medal. Worth an extra 1000pts to your round score.

Cap-mmander (10) - Earn a Gold Medal. Worth an extra 2000pts to your round score.

Cap-mmodore (25) - Earn a Platinum Medal. Worth an extra 5000pts to your round score.

Perfectionist (25) - Catch all caps at any one level. Only really feasible on the first level, and not very difficult. However, this level will replace the Cap-mmander medal for that level rather than awarding both to you, so you will need to achieve Cap-mmander on a subsequent level.

Stack Burner (25) - Burn a stack of blue caps at Gold height. Must be blue caps, and must be at Gold height; Platinum height won't count.

Achiever (25) - Get at least 7 achievements. This medal is awarded when you view the achievements in-game.

Magician (25) - Finish a level with a black magician hat on top of the stack. Do this on level 3 with a short cap stack.

Cowboy (25) - Finish a level with a brown cowboy hat on top of the stack. Do this on level 5 with a short cap stack.

Quitter (5) - Even quitting a level earns you an achievement. Now try again harder! Basically, return to menu during a game.

First Hiscore (25) - Earn your very first highscore by beating the game.

Beating Your Own (25) - Now try to beat your own highscore. i.e. play and finish the game a second time.

Bragging Rights (5) - Send your score for the world to see.

Touch the Sky (100) - Are you hardcore enough? Build a stack of caps and touch the top of the screen! This medal is entirely based on luck, because when your stack of caps is that tall you don't have any time to react. That means you need the torches to fall away from you, and the hats to fall right on top of you. It's possible on any level from 3 onward.

When the medals are approved, this guide will be updated with their values.

By The Level:
Level 1 has 43 hats, 8 of which are green. There are no hazards.

Level 2 is fast-moving with 72 blue hats, and torches make their first appearance. They will be in every subsequent level.

Level 3 is slower-paced, with 68 hats, 6 of which are black top hats. The top hats only appear in this level. This is the first level in which a Platinum score is feasible, and the first level in which the Touch the Sky medal is possible.

Level 4 is quickly-paced again, with 99 blue hats. The electrified ninja stars are introduced in this level, and will be in the following level as well.

Level 5 is quickly-paced with 93 hats, 7 of which are brown cowboy hats and the rest are green hats. That means every hat in this level is worth 20 points.

Comments

Thanks for the guide! After numerous playthroughs I got the touch the sky on level 3. I collected as many magician hats as possible to build up height quickly and just hoped for the best once i was in the platinum area.

I got the medal when my hat tower was just above the bottom of the score on the left. It didnt hit the very top of the screen. I dont know if this is a glitch or intentional. Im hoping its intentional or else that medal is basically impossible.

I don't think Touch the Sky is entirely luck based. One torch falls after every five hats (the number of hats depends on the level). So you can know when a torch is coming by counting the hats. It is unlikely that a torch will fall twice in the space spot (tough it can happen). So when you know a torch is coming, move to the spot where the last torch appeared. This makes it not ENTIRELY luck based.

You might want to mention that the torch allowed to hit your stack EXCEPT for the top.
Also, can you make clear what the point of the cowboy hats is, except for being slightly larger than normal caps?

Good guide, man.

For the "Touch the Sky" medal it seems that level 5 is the easiest to obtain it in, since it has an excess of hats. The other two, 3 and 4, have just barely enough to make it to the top, and you can't miss any of them if you go for that medal.
