Vote honestly

Posted by DiMono - March 29th, 2011

Hey you. Yes you. When's the last time you took a serious look at what makes it through the portal? Why don't you spend a few minutes and look at it now. Don't worry, I'll wait...

...did you see it? Did you see the mountain of shitty, unworthy entries that make it through? That's because people have no idea how to vote. Since most submissions pass judgment, rather than actually watching an entry and judging it fairly, people just open it, vote 5 and move on, often without even knowing what it is they're voting on. People are playing the numbers game: most flashes pass, so odds are voting 5 will get a save point.

You need to cut it out.

The point of the portal is not to inflate a statistic on your profile which is essentially meaningless. The point is to make sure that only flashes that are worth seeing make it through the system. The point is to be a buffer so that people can say "this is utter trash, this shouldn't be here" and get rid of the crap. You people who are voting 5 blindly are literally ruining the reputation of Newgrounds.

I'm not saying everything should be blammed, I'm saying you need to be more critical of what you vote to save. Actually watch the thing before deciding how to vote, and then vote honestly rather than with how you think the masses will vote. If a submission is crap, vote 0 or 1. If it's okay but nothing special, vote 2 or 3. If it's awesome, vote 4 or 5. But don't arbitrarily vote 5 just because 4 out of 5 submissions pass and you want the save points. If you're only here to increase the number of saves you have, then you're here for the wrong reason.

You're on Newgrounds. Care about it.

I hate seeing crap coming into Newgrounds.
I only vote highly on something if I know its good.
And if I see something that just sucks I vote really low on it.

I don't have a small amount of blams because I 5 everything, I've got a small amount of blams because my 0's and 1's didn't do anything compared to all the statwhores flooding the place. It's a sad, sad, crap filled world T_T

Also, congrats on a perfect 5,000 B/P rank

It's actually a perfect 5,000 Experience rank, but thank you all the same. I wasn't even expecting to break the 5,000 mark until tomorrow!

Thank you! I noticed today that all the garbage I was voting low scores on (deserved I thought) were getting through at an alarming rate. Not stuff I didn't care for mind you (things that were well put together, but not my cup of tea I mean), but silly little flashes that didn't really offer up much in the way of effort on the part of the animator.

Hopefully more people take your words to heart, DiMono. Many things making the front page don't deserve to make it past the voting stage.

True. True.

It's news posts like this that make me wish we had like buttons. :P

I don't know why I said B/P...

http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view /566107

now, if this submission gets through judgement we all know that we still have a long way to go.

In case it gets blammed: It's a simple test (it doesn't even have a real name!) with some sprite figure doing an attack motion.

I agree. I seriously vote 0 in pretty much everything (not really everything, I vote fairly).

Also, people who vote fairly need to know about Portal Guard.

Not very good, but good enough.

I remember when I tried rallying the troops like this years ago. All of the big name users looked down upon me for trying to change things and trying to be better then everyone else.

That's why I stopped helping this site as much as I use to. I will always continue to vote honestly, but after that I'm really not helping spread the word. Tried it, got flamed for it, won't do it again.

Did the same with posts and other aspects of the website. Got turned down by the public every time. Especially those from the Wi/Ht.

See, the problem is you're not Bahamut. He took the lead on this, I just turned it into a news entry. When a mod takes up the leadership role, people tend to follow.

That's my point. When someone who isn't as important says something write it's still wrong to the public.

*right

It's as simple as this: The people doing it don't give a shit about the site, or how many people they piss off, or anything else aside from their precious points. Complaining is a waste of time, no matter how valid your logic is. The only ones listening to the complaints are those who vote fairly already.

At first, I'd usually leave high marks: 4's or 5's. After about a month, though, I thoroughly checked seeing through the flash and found mountains and mountains of shitty flash. Now, I would obviously leave 1's and 0's. However, my blams are still low due to everyone else leaving high marks without checking, so I have way more saves than blams than necessary.

It is what it is. 0's and 1's are for the bad one's, 2's and 3's are average, and 4's and 5's are great, in summary.

100% agreed.
I hate that shit as much as you do.

MAJOR NOTICE: During night time alot more crap is being submitted, HOW EVER i have also noticed that during the same time every crap submission gets blammed.
Just keep track of this, you'll notice the same.

So be sure to grab the blam points at night.
(Check server time, depending on where ypu live it could be way off)
